‘A critical role in broadening access to the industry’: An introduction to the Publishing Professional Apprenticeship

Celia at LDN Apprenticeships explains how they can help publishers in the process of setting up an apprenticeship scheme, including recruitment and providing an outstanding classroom component.
For the last five years, LDN Apprenticeships has been delivering the Level 4 Publishing Professional Apprenticeship, supporting over 100 apprentices in building successful careers within the publishing industry. With an achievement rate of 83.8%, significantly exceeding the national average of 54.6%, the programme equips organisations with skilled, motivated professionals who can make an immediate impact.
Diversity remains a key challenge in publishing, and this apprenticeship is playing a critical role in broadening access to the industry, creating opportunities for underrepresented talent:
- 45% are non-graduates;
- 28% are from ethnic minority backgrounds;
- 19% received free school meals.
LDN Apprenticeships offers a different approach to publishing recruitment: our CV-free recruitment process attracts individuals from diverse and non-traditional backgrounds, ensuring a wider, more inclusive talent pool for publishing organisations. Our dedicated talent team selects candidates based on their skills and potential, rather than academic qualifications.
The apprenticeship is not just for new hires—many publishing companies are using the programme to develop existing employees in areas covering AI, sustainability and DE&I, maximising their apprenticeship levy at the same time.
Apprentices receive comprehensive support with a dedicated skills coach with publishing expertise, committed to their success. A structured plan is provided from day one, outlining all key areas covered throughout the 15-month programme. The Employer Hub offers real-time insights into apprentice progress, allowing managers to track development at any time. Line managers are encouraged to stay actively involved by participating in bi-monthly coaching sessions and objective-setting discussions. This structured approach has ensured a 100% pass rate, with 64 apprentices who received a distinction grade.
“As an editor, my position is built on the skills I developed on the apprenticeship scheme. From the learning courses that solidify the key role each department plays and contributes, which are invaluable in understanding my role and organisation, to the social side of masterclasses and live sessions that are so helpful in building a network, socialising, and developing communication skills.”
Matthew Heyhoe, Editor, Alain Charles Publishing
Navigating apprenticeship funding can be complex, but we provide thorough guidance—from setting up a government account to accessing levy share schemes, ensuring all costs are covered. The process is quick and straightforward, requiring only a few minutes of paperwork.
“I thought the plan over the two days and how you recruit was really inspiring. There was a great group of potential candidates and all were employable – a shame we only had one role.”
Katie Thorn Vice President, Global Sales and Marketing, Macmillan Learning
