Dr Andres Guadamuz, Reader in IP Law, University of Sussex In discussion with Dan Conway, Chief Executive, Publishers Association.

The potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) became clear for all to see when ChatGPT burst into the discussion last November. Government policy is to make the UK a world leader in AI and committed to spending £900m towards this goal in the recent budget. AI relies on deep learning from existing content, including words, images and music protected by copyright. The UK’s publishing and other creative industries are themselves already world leaders for the content they have created and produced. As a specialist in both AI and copyright Dr Guadamuz is ideally placed to explain the challenges on both sides and to give his perspective on what this means for the future of copyright.
